This is a cracking North Pennines ride: flowing moorland out of Middleton‑in‑Teesdale, a dramatic climb over Hartside with big‑sky views, then a lovely twisty section before a fast, open run toward Penrith. It’s one of those routes that feels purpose‑built for motorcycles.

Middleton‑in‑Teesdale → Alston (Hartside side)

This stretch is classic North Pennines riding:

• Open moorland with long sightlines and gentle elevation changes.

• Fast, flowing bends where you can settle into a rhythm.

• The road surface is usually decent but can have sheep, gravel patches, and wind gusts across exposed sections.

• The scenery is huge — rolling fells, wide horizons, and that feeling of being properly “out there”.

As you approach Alston, the road tightens slightly, giving you a nice mix before you start the climb toward Hartside.

The Climb to Hartside Pass

• The ascent is progressive and dramatic, with a series of wide, cambered bends that encourage confident cornering.

• On a clear day, the views are ridiculous — you can see across the Eden Valley and deep into the Lake District.

• The summit area is exposed, so expect strong crosswinds and temperature drops.

Even though the old café is gone, Hartside still feels like a proper motorcycling landmark.

Hartside → Penrith 

The descent and run westward is a change of character:

• Leaving Hartside, the road drops quickly into thrilling hairpins and fast straights.  Smooth tarmac, quiet roads, means concentration is required.  Further on, the road opens up to greener farmland, the Eden Valley, and glimpses of Lakeland Mountains.

• Traffic increases as you near Penrith, but the approach is still enjoyable and relaxed.
